Charms go back as far as the beginning of time, where man would pick up an unusual stone or piece of wood and carry it with him to ward off his enemies. Elaborate jewelry made of precious stones and metals emerged during the age of the Egyptian Pharaohs. It was during this time that the first recognizable charm bracelets and necklaces first appeared.

Like people of many ancient civilizations, the citizens of ancient Egypt lived very short lives by today's standard - 30 to 40 years on average. With so little time on earth, they obsessively prepared for a prosperous life after death. Charm bracelets played a significant role in the preparation process. Charm wrist and neck bracelets were not only coveted as protective shields and signs of status in this life, they were also worn as ID tags to help the Gods guide the wearer and his/her possessions to the proper status level in the afterlife. A Summer to Remember

One of the most exciting part of our company's mission, is the discovery of new things. Whether it's a parcel of rare rough gemstones we found tucked away and forgotten by a gem dealer, or a small hoard of vintage jewelry that had been stored in a safety deposit box over the past several decades, I still get that "night before Christmas" child-like feeling of the anticipation and suprise! This summer was no exception. With today's economy, and the high price of gold and silver, many individuals have decided to unearth those family heirlooms or special treasures and
offer them for sale. We take special pride in helping those individuals find new homes for their precious items, which in many cases, saves them from being melted down, so that future generations can enjoy these works of art.

This summer, we were able to purchase several collections of fabulous jewelry, that we are currently unpacking and getting ready to be shown to the public. One such collection was made up of several Native American Navajo pieces, all had not seen the light of day for many years. Tourmalated Quartz Cabochon Hoard Discovered

What a find! We were very fortunate this past month to stumble upon a gem broker that had huge hoard of tourmalated quartz cabachons and needed cash. We were able to by them all and parcel them all up in 1,000 carat lots.

Featured is a mixed parcel of natural tourmalated quartz. Each tourmalated quartz cabochon is of mixed shape and can measure from aprx. 10x10mm to 30x40mm, and can weigh aprx. 10 to 60 carats each! Tourmalated quartz has needle like inclusions made of tourmaline. Usually these needles are black and the quartz is clear or milky. As this quartz crystal was growing it enveloped tourmaline crystals, forming tourmalated quartz. Tourmalated quartz can be found in a few places on earth. These particula gems were discovered in Brazil. Pictured is a sample, taken from the much larger parcel, of the actual gemstones being offered. Agate is found all over the world, and several different varieties of agate can be found in Mexico. One of the most stunning and colorful agate, is that of the Fire Dragon Lace Agate. A name given to this type of multicolor quartz, because of its rich "glowing" ember-like qualities. We were very pleased, when we last met with one of our gemstone buyers, to discover he had several bead strands of this incredible gemstone. Not to mention, they were large round 12mm beads and each had been hand faceted! The colors in these bead strands are remarkable. From hot red to deep orange to rich tropical blue and light champagne. We were able to purchase just a few of these strands, and sold them right away, leaving us only two more strands currently being offered on our website.

Agate is a variety of chalcedony formed from layers of quartz which usually show varicolored bands. It usually occurs as rounded nodules or veins. Often tiny quartz crystals form within the stone and add to the beauty and uniqueness of individual stones. These crystals are called "drusy". Lapidaries often cut just the drusy from an agate and jewelers use these drusy cabochons as the main stone or as an accent stone in their jewelry designs.

Agate is believed to discern truth, accept circumstances, and is a powerful emotional healer. Legend says that Agate improves memory and concentration, increases stamina and encourages honesty. Agate is said to be particularly beneficial to people born under the sign of Gemini as it helps them to remain calm and focused. This Friday, Gold Crown Jewelry marked the official opening of its gallery of fine and unique rough and specimen gemstone collections. After numerous customer requests asking us to sell “natural gemstone” specimens, we decided to consult with our buyers to see if it was something that we could offer, that could be both satisfactory to gemstone enthusiasts and economical. Needless to say, Friday and Saturday was a busy day. We sold so many gemstones, we could barely keep up. We just finished listing a few more late Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Some of the highlights of the gallery offer were a 2.56 carat rough diamond, a nice clear clean 10.85 carat blue sapphire, and a unique 7.77 carat rough tanzanite crystal. Still featured right now in the gallery is a large natural 15.46 carat violet sapphire specimen, with a pink to deep purple color. It was a nice collector piece found in parcel that originated from Thailand.

It goes without saying, one of our favorite gemstones is the Imperial Topaz. With its hot pink-to-golden-to-orange color, faceted, these little gems can demand any asking price. We were able to get our hands on a few of the gem rough material at a great price. Featured, is a natural 5.58 carat Imperial Topaz, still available as of this printing.

Love, love, love opal! But, Oregon Opal? Yes, that's right, Oregon Opal. Found in southern Oregon, Oregon Opal appears as a translucent clear gem. Oregon (fire) Opal is unlike any other opal. While most opals are renowned for the play of color and reflections from within, Oregon Opal is named for its fiery colors, including yellows, oranges, and reds. It may or may not show an opalescent "play of color", but is valued mostly for its intense colors.

Does anything make you think of summer more that watermelon? During this unusually cold winter, we were fortunate to get our hands on quaint pieces of watermelon tourmaline crystals. Each with its natural red, clear, and green color characteristic. Shown here, is a 1.82 carat crystal.

Ok, its been about a month since we last posted on our blog, but with good reason. For the past couple of months, we have been working on upgrading all our computer systems, servers, hardward and software to better serve the needs of our great customers. In addition, we have spent time developing new strategies to reach even more customers with the addition of our companies new Facebook and Twitter pages. Seems the more out reach you do, the busier you get! Fortunately, we've been able to "link up" each of our sites, so that when one updates, they all do.

Now that these new social media avenues are up and running, we'll be making some additional changes to our website as well. Some of these changes will streamline the check out process, be able to link products to this blog, especially if you want to find out more about a specific item. We are also playing with the idea of free shipping on some of our items.

HIDDEN DECO SAPPHIRE TREASURE SURVIVES DECADES

The Art Deco period in jewelry making was an important era of style that sets it apart from other motifs in jewelry design. The Art Deco period was founded by several French artists following the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels, held in 1925. Art Deco period jewelry takes its namesake from the architectural design of the period called the “decorative arts,” later shortened to “Art Deco.”

Jewelry from the Art Deco period took on an 'architectural' appearance, with gemstones being cut in bold geometric shapes such as the emerald cut, pentagon, square, or triangle "trillion" cut. Another characteristic of the Art Deco movement was to combine bold, contrasting tones like blue and white. Diamonds and bold colored gemstones were mixed with various white metals (white gold and sometimes silver) and set into patterns using straight lines, circles and box shapes.

Finding this traditional deco sapphire and diamond bar pin, was a real treat. Having been stored in a jewelry box for decades, seemingly untouched, its original “boldness” seemed to jump to life when we brought it into the light. With its incredible detail, and only measuring about an inch long, it was more than likely a small token of love to a very special women who treasured it her entire lifetime.

With Halloween fast approaching, and thoughts of kids trick or treating, carving pumpkins, apple bobbing, and of course festive parties, one may wonder, what to wear? One theme in fine jewelry you don’t often see and can be hard to find is jewelry that reflects the Halloween spirit. Well we found one this past season, a really nice one. Crafted of fine rich yellow 18KT gold, a rare custom on-of-a-kind spider web brooch complete with dangling spider.

The intricate web design is host to a vibrant oval tanzanite surrounded by eight glossy teardrop shaped onyx cabochons. Black and purple have always been colors of this fall holiday tradition. Additionally, randomly scattered about, are several small fine white round diamond dewdrops, which gives this piece its eye catching appeal. Seemly, having just spun the web, a diamond encrusted jewel in and of itself, the spider!

Now, a Halloween jeweled brooch wouldn’t be complete without it’s “trick”. The trick of this unique treat is that the brooch can be worn with the spider pinned next to web, or it can be worn so that the spider tangles below the web. Additionally, the brooch can be worn as a necklace! Your favorite necklace can be added to this piece, strung through the side opposite the spider, which allows it to hang as one continuous piece!

SIGNED MEXICAN BULLFIGHTER CUFFLINKS

A lively interest in humble Mexican folk artistry developed in the United States as early as the l920's--along with an appreciation for emerging Mexican artists, such as the mural painters Diego Riviera and Jose Orosco, who were then working on an urbane and international level. Mexican silver jewelry, with its impressive craftsmanship, imagination, and exoticism, offered North Americans an opportunity to purchase on a small scale an authentic work of art that shared its roots with major movements in contemporary intellectual tastes. Within Mexico, artist colonies arose which produced enormously influential silver jewelry from the 1930's through the 1950’s.

This is a spectacular set of Mexican Silver Cufflinks. In the center of each cufflink is a bull and bullfighter, both are blackened to make the stand out. The cufflinks are 1" wide x 3/4" tall and are signed on the reverse "DANNY'S HECHO EN MEXICO 925". They are a fine example of vintage collectible Mexican Silver.

Labradorite is truly a fascinatingly beautiful mineral. Its a mineral whose charm is not fully noticed and may be overlooked if not viewed from the proper position. Generally a dull, dark looking mineral with no special virtue until the colorful shiller is observed glowing on the surface. Labradorite can produce a colorful play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections called labradorescence. The usually intense colors range from the typical blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. Some rare specimens display all these colors simultaneously.

This unusual specimen weighs in at over 140 carats, and is a 50x37mm oval cabochon. As you can see from the photos, when you hold it just right, the light catches the surface of the gem, and an incredible one-of-a-kind island sunset image is revealed!!

A STAR IS BORN...BLACK IS BACK

A few years ago, we found this wonderful piece during an estate buy. At first, we did not pay much attention to it, as we thought it was just another black onyx piece. But then the light hit it just right, and WOW, what appeared were five of the most stunning and matching genuine black star sapphires. Each gem has a crisp six ray star. Perhaps they were cut from the same stone? They are very well polished given the age of the piece, which would be about circa 1950.

A Star Sapphire is a Sapphire that exhibits a star-like phenomenon (asterism). This is caused by inclusions known as silk. When silk inclusions are abundant the Sapphire becomes translucent or Opaque and this effects the way that the gemstone reflects light. The effect created is a star (usually made up of six rays, but sometimes twelve), that seems to float over the surface of the Sapphire as it is moved.

Each parcel is a unique collection of over 500+ carats of genuine gemstone cabochon. There are no faceted gems or beads in these pacels. None of these gems have pre-drilled holes in them. Great for wire-wrapping and silver jewelry.

There are a wide variety of sizes and colors. Shapes are apprx. 5mm rounds (smallest) to 10x12 or 12x16mm ovals, trillions, fancies and more. Individual gemstone carat sizes can be from 2 carats to 50+ carat sizes. There are aprx. 30-40 individual gems in each 500cttw parcel. Gems can include any of the following: various agates (fun mixed colors), tiger eye, rutile quartz, moonstone, labradorite, various jaspers, unikite, amethyst, jade, amazonite, aventturine, obsidian, sodalite, and much more!

In 1906, Rolls-Royce LTD was registered as a trademark, Mount Vesuvius erupts and devastates Naples, San Francisco earthquake on the San Andreas Fault destroys much of San Francisco, California, the first Victor Victrola, a phonographic record player, is manufactured and President Theodore Roosevelt leaves for a trip to Panama to inspect the construction progress of the Panama Canal (this was the first time a sitting President of the United States made an official trip outside of the United States). Surviving wars, the stock market crash, many presidents, the gold rush and the changes of the automobile, this ring has survived.

Found in a small box, bought from an old estate a while back, was this 110 year old wedding ring has survived the trials and tribulations of generations. Who was the woman who wore this? Who was the man that gave this ring of marriage? How long did the marriage last? Was it a love story? So many questions. The one question that can be answered, with certainty, is that this 110 year old piece of history has withstood the test of time and is in fantastic shape. From the small delicate prongs that hold this fine mine-cut diamond, to the hand-carved inscription inside the 14KT yellow gold band, it looks as if it has been in a safety deposit box for its entire life.

A PINK PEARL IS PERFECT SYMBOL OF LOVE

The pearl is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. A fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. The Latin word for pearl means "unique” which attests to the fact that no two pearls are identical. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence.

While pearls can be found in a variety of colors, it is thought that pink or the rose colored pearl is the symbol of love. Mabe’ Pearls are half pearls, grown by attaching a nucleus to the inside of the shell and letting it be covered by nacre on one side. These 15mm pink mabe' pearls are accented by two find Columbian emerald cabochons. The earrings are crafted in solid 14KT yellow gold.

Well it happened today! We just opened a fresh parcel of natural gemstones from one of our suppliers, and to our suprise, they shipped us 2 1/2 times what we origionally asked for and they charged us for them to boot!! Sometimes, I think they do this on purpose, because of the economy.

We figured, by the time we repackaged them all back up, and paid the return shipping and insurance, we might as well keep them and offer them to all our valued customers for a really inexpensive (give away) price. So, we contacted the supplier, and they gave us a discount for the "mistake overage" (yah, right!), so now we are just liquidating them on Ebay for $1 each gemstone, to turn our gems back into cash. A CORUNDUM DEEP BLUE LIKE THE OCEAN

It does not take much to stir the mind with thoughts of royalty when you see this gem. For centuries, kings and queens have privately enjoyed this blue corundum, which is commonly called the sapphire. While sapphires come in a range of vibrant colors, it is blue that captures the most recognition. This large 1.20 carat oval natural blue sapphire, was cut from near flawless rough material and hand fit, to be nestled into this mounting and then surrounded by extremely fine VS white diamonds. This 18KT gold piece of art came to us from a private collector of sapphire jewelry, who mostly admired and collected this particular shade of blue.

VINTAGE "PEAKS AND VALLEYS" AGATE

Agates come in a variety of shapes, sizes and patterns. Some of the more prized agates, while common in nature, have unsual patterns (or pictures) that make them look like a small painting. Agates are found all over the world from America to Zimbabwe. Agates are a variety of quartz, that are formed in layers and come in a wide array of colors. Tiny variances in the formation, can make an agate form "pictures" or other outdoor scenes like mountain ranges or desert landscapes.

The vintage agate brooch is 1" x 3/4" in size with a fine transparent natural brown/cream agate (aprx. 20crts), that features a "peaks and valley" design. Like most picture agates, looking over the surface of this gems, looks like a group of mountain ranges, with the largest (closest) mountain to the right. The brooch is crafted in solid 925 silver.
